Michael J. Payton is a filmmaker, entrepreneur, and social justice change agent from Oakland, California. A self-taught storyteller and musician, Payton drew inspiration from his mother’s affinity for poetry and music, which she integrated into his homeschool curriculum. Upon completing high school, Payton was granted the Shawn Carter Foundation scholarship to attend San Francisco State University, where he studied media communications and African American studies.
Michael J. Payton directed and produced the five-part documentary, The Murder Inc. Story, which reveals key perspectives from the likes of music industry magnates like Jay-Z and Lyor Cohen vis-à-vis the rise, fall, and subsequent redemption of the label. The Murder Inc Story docuseries is streaming now on BET and BET+.
Michael J. Payton are currently in production on a feature-length documentary about the Shawn Carter Foundation, a non-profit founded by Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, and his mother Hon. Dr. Gloria Carter. The documentary tracks the rise of the Foundation in 2003, to the numerous impacts it continues to make on individuals and communities.
